About Your Therapist

Warm, curious, and deeply committed to your healing. I'm here to walk alongside you.

Hello, I'm Glad You're Here

My name is Hillary Maier, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in perinatal mental health, EMDR, trauma, and grief therapy in Michigan.

I became a therapist because I believe in the profound capacity people have to heal — even from experiences that have left them feeling broken, stuck, or like they will never find solid ground again. The name of this practice, River & Rebirth, reflects exactly that belief: rivers move. Water finds its way. And even after the hardest winters, there is always spring.

My Approach to Care

In our work together, we approach therapy through two lenses. First, we prioritize your immediate safety and stability. We'll build a “toolbox” of practical skills to help you navigate the world right now. Second, we do the deeper investigative work. Think of it like those “clue walls” in detective stories, where we map out the red strings connecting your current triggers to their origins so we can uncover why certain wounds remain open and begin to heal them. You aren't just surviving your past; you are learning to lead a life that isn't dictated by it. Above all please remember, no matter who you are, or what your role is in this world, you deserve to be cared for too.

A note on care: I welcome clients of all ages, genders, races, religions, lifestyles, backgrounds, and family structures into my practice. As a licensed clinician, it is my job to act as a clinical mirror to help clients examine how their experience and core beliefs impact their growth. I operate from a framework of inherent human dignity; therefore we will actively challenge any thought patterns or dehumanizing views that marginalize others, as these not only cause harm but act as barriers to the person you are striving to become.

I draw on several evidence-based frameworks:

  • EMDR Therapy
  • IFS Therapy
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Attachment-based approaches
  • Somatic-informed techniques
  • Cognitive approaches like TF-CBT
  • Art therapy techniques

Why Perinatal Mental Health?

The perinatal period — pregnancy, postpartum, pregnancy loss, infertility, and the transition into parenthood — is one of the most vulnerable and transformative seasons a person can experience. Yet it is also one where suffering is frequently minimized or dismissed.

I have specialized training in perinatal mental health because I deeply believe this season deserves skilled, specialized care. Whether you are struggling with postpartum depression or anxiety, grieving a loss, processing a difficult birth experience, or simply finding your footing as a new parent — I see you, and I am here.

Outside the Office

When I am not in session, you might find me exploring the outdoors with my family, tackling my never-ending romantasy TBR, or crafting the day away.

Ready to take the first step? I offer a free 15-minute phone consultation so we can connect before you commit to anything. Reach out — I'd love to hear from you.
